Things to do & Places to See!

Things to do & Places to See!

If you’re joining us at SCCO from outside southern California, this may be the article for you! During your time here (especially your first few quarters), you’ll find yourself with some free time to go explore some awesome places not far from our little campus. Day trips or even weekend trips can be a great way to bond with new classmates and have some fun!

If you want to check out the beaches nearby (which you definitely should!), Huntington and Newport beach offer both great shopping, restaurants, and surf! It’s a great place to unwind and get some sun. LA’s beaches are a bit further, such as Redondo, Manhattan, Santa Monica, and Venice, but are also very beautiful and have many attractions to check out!

An obvious attraction in southern California is Disneyland. It’s definitely a fun day activity and many of our classmates have season passes - so it’s definitely worth visiting if you’ve never been. Another option is Knott’s Berry farm in Buena Park. They have rollercoasters and a Halloween haunt that’s super fun. I go every year! If you’re a rollercoaster junkie, Six Flags is about an hour and a half away in Ventura if you’re willing to make the drive.

LA is a really cool place to visit, with endless things to do! The Griffith Observatory is beautiful and sometimes holds free concerts. There are many museums to see as well, my favorite being the Broad Museum. Universal Studios is a fun LA activity, especially during Christmas time when it snows in Harry Potter world! In addition, the nightlife is fantastic, so if that interests you it’s definitely a fun activity to do with friends.

San Diego is beautiful and also not too far of a drive. Once there, you could visit the beaches – Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Coronado, and many more. There’s also the San Diego zoo, which is honestly one of the best I’ve been to. The Gaslamp Quarter is an amazing downtown city area near the water that has good food, bars and entertainment. When I visited, I loved renting a bike and riding it near the water. Close to that, there’s Balboa park, another beautiful place to spend some time.

If you’re an outdoorsy person, there are awesome places to go camping and hiking. Joshua Tree is one of my favorite places in the world when the weather is nice, with great trails and a night sky to die for – I’ve never seen so many stars in my life! There’s also Idyllwild, Julian, Big Bear (great skiing in the winter!), and San Clemente to name some of my personal favorites.

These are just a few of my favorite places to go, and I could go on forever if someone let me. I hope this helps when you when you’re planning some fun activities to take a break from studying!
